This text provides readers with an exploratory lens into the general world of the Fab Lab with an in-depth focus on two specific types of machinery: laser cutters and engravers. These machines give users the unique opportunity to create through the removal of material from its source. Included for readers are hands-on tips and tricks for operating laser cutters and engravers, providing a variety of projects for every experience level, all the while connecting these skills to real-world business models and careers. This title tackles the arts and design element of STEAM more than any other Fab Lab machines do.

Reviews-
April 1, 2017 Gr 6-8-Although each volume contains a few exercises that would be useful in getting to know the capabilities of equipment students are likely to encounter in maker spaces, labs, and workshops, these are not strictly activity books. Rather, they provide reasonable conceptual introductions to the machines-and the cool things that can be done with them. Given the rapidly evolving nature of maker technology and the ever-increasing accessibility of high-tech fabricating machines, it probably makes more sense to take this more general approach. Topics address the collaborative nature of maker culture, the autonomy that young people are given to pursue their projects, and the career opportunities that open up once students have gained experience with computer-aided design and fabrication. Ample resources are provided for finding a camp, group, or space that allows free or low-cost access to fab lab-type equipment. VERDICT Great resource for those interested in maker technology.
