هذا كتاب عن سيرة اسماعيل باشا، الخديويّ الأوّل، حفيد محمّد علي، الذي عُرف بولعه بالبذخ، ولكن أيضًا بإنجازاته الكثيرة، وبالتحديث الذي شغله طوال فترة حكمه.
وُلِد إسماعيل باشا عام 1830، وحكم مصر منذ 1863 حتى 1879. وعلى عكس جدّه صاحب الأصول التركيّة – المقدونيّة، الذي استحوذ على السلطة بقوّة السلاح، قُدِّمت لإسماعيل مصر مزدهرة ذات موقع استراتيجيّ على طريق الهند. معه، بدأت رحلة التحديث في بلادٍ راحت تتشبّه بالقوى الأوروبّيّة الكبرى: قناة السويس. مناهج مستعارة من الغرب لتحديث قطاع التعليم. إصلاح النظام القضائيّ. تطوير في البنى التحتيّة وطرق المواصلات. كلّ ذلك، يضاف إليه أيضًا أموال طائلة صرفها اسماعيل باشا في سبيل الحصول على لقب «الخديويّ» من الباب العالي. في النهاية، وبعد تنازله مرغمًا عن العرش عام 1879، توارث ولاة مصر إنجازاته ولقبه، ولكن أيضًا بلادًا على حافّة الهاوية.

روبير سوليه – وُلِد روبير سوليه في القاهرة، وعمل صحفيًّا في جريدة Le Monde مدّة طويلة، وكاتبًا في صحيفة Le 1 الأسبوعيّة، فسخّر العديد من مقالاته لمصر، بلده الأصلي. وقد ألّف كتبًا عديدة، نقلت منها نوفل إلى العربية: «السادات» (2015)، «وجوه مصر الحديثة» (2020)، ورواية «فندق مهرجان» (2017).
